What To Do At The Dome

... absolutely nothing...

There are no formal activities... your agenda is yours .....

just relax, unwind and soak up the peace.

This is your own private space in which to walk, go bird-watching, watch the magical Karoo sun go down, savour crisp champagne in the cold tub on warm evenings, read a good book,  star-gaze, drink coffee under a thorn tree, braai until late in the evening, wait quietly for passing game.

You may be lucky to see passing Karoo animals even though most are very shy.  This is not a game farm, our animals are natural Karoo residents:  kudu, steenbuck, duiker, fallow deer, vervet monkey, rhebuck, tortoise, antbear, bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, Cape fox, meerkat, spotted genet, grey mongoose, yellow mongoose, Cape clawless otter, black-footed cat & caracul.

We have a list in the Dome of the many Camdeboo birds.

What To Do in Graaff-Reinet

Settle in for a few days and take time to explore our local town, the historic and beautiful Graaff-Reinet.

The Dome is an easy 29 km outside of the town.  An extra day or two will allow you time to explore all that Graaff-Reinet offers as well as a trip to the Valley of Desolation and the quaint town of Nieu-Bethesda.

With over 220 heritage sites, Graaff-Reinet has more national monuments than any other town in  South Africa.  Your exploration list can be gentle & endless...

The Valley of Desolation, Camdeboo National Park, Drostdy Hotel, Groot Kerk (built by the owner's forebears), Reinet House, Hester Rupert Art Museum, Anglo-Boer War Memorial, Urquhart House, Old Library, San & Khoi Memorial, Robert Subukwe's birthplace & the Old Powder Magazine War Memorial amongst others.

Restaurants compliment the old-world charm of the town: Our Yard, Coldstream, de Camdeboo at the Drostdy Hotel, Hello You etc.  Spoil yourselves with a steaming, delicious coffee in the courtyard at Marias & do yourselves a huge favour & taste our local tequila & rum.

Travel up to Nieu-Bethesda to see The Owl House, the sculptures of Helen Martins, the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre & Ganora, and hitch a donkey cart ride to tour around this quaint little town.

...and remember to take home a few antiques from Reinet Antiques & Lot 44 as well as some fine wine from the Camdeboo Wijnkamer.
